KPMG’s guidance on the extension until 31 December 2026 explains that eligible late-payment penalties on installments due after 31 December 2026 may also be waived under an approved plan, subject to its conditions. Pro Tip

The maintenance of a tracker that describes the type of load, tax period, the return status, the basic tax balance, the sanction categories, the conformity assessment, the following measure, the responsible person and the time limits. This improves understanding of what is left unresolved.

How Accounting Software and ERP Help Prevent Repeat ZATCA Penalties:

The exemption allowance will cover penalties that they have previously implemented and which do not provide a solution to any operational problems they may have caused. Companies should review financial processes in order to reduce the risk of repeated deadlines, incomplete documentation and data reconciliation errors.

A suitable accounting or ERP system can help teams:

Track financial records:

Provides the organization of sales, purchasing, spending, taxes and payments.

Monitor outstanding balances:

The assessment and the reconciliation of financial groups with unpaid amounts is facilitated.

Maintain an audit trail:

Save information regarding the transactions and supporting information for internal inspection.

Improve deadline visibility:

Use the available reminders, targets and reporting tools to monitor assistance teams deadlines.

Support e-invoicing workflows:

Use a properly designed system to process accounts information and associated e-invoicing processes.

The approved Accounting software rating firms ZATCA reviews the actual potential and feasibility of the product that is currently subject to regulation before implementation.

See ZATCA-approved e-invoicing for invoice workflows in KSA. Authorities satisfying Phase 2 shall also verify the requirements of e-invoicing Phase 2 and specify their current ZATCA obligations requirements.

The system may maintain, monitor and process invoices but is not an ex-tax exemption, nor is it itself guaranteed. The company will remain responsible for registration, payment, configuration and verification processes.

How AI Is Changing Tax Compliance:

Artificial intelligence’s increasing use has been used in support of accounting and compliance workflows. For Saudi companies viewing historical tax data, AI can help identify information that calls attention, provided that the tools in the selected system are really available and the underlying data is reliable.

AI in accounting:

AI enabled tools can help flag mismatches between ledger items submitted, duplicate or identify unusual transactions and mark incoming returns or corners. The findings should be considered as requests for revision instead of evidence of incorrect tax declarations.

AI in e-invoicing:

Auto-checks may identify missing invoicing fields or inconsistent data before submission if checked. In the past, the failure to manage relief teams may have been a cause of flaw. However, they will not replace or confirm an invoice acceptance by ZATCA to any existing technical requirements.

AI-assisted tax research:

Clear answers, specific data, comparability tables, FAQs and links to major sources help readers understand a time-sensitive subject. They also facilitate the search for content of individuals using AI tools. Official ZATCA announcement must remain the main reference to the current situation in the Initiative.

Clean data first, people decide:

Except in accordance with any particular terms which are expressly backed by a workflow, the AI may not make a lack of explanation, pay back the tax debt or approve a payment plan on behalf of the entity. Documentation’s harmonization, the revision of the applicable rules and submission of appropriate documentation will also require financing for Teams. The right to participate will be determined by ZATCA. A tax consultant who is able to benefit from assistance will need to investigate complex cases.

Best Practice

The use of automation in identifying discrepancies and managing work rather than establishing unverified promises due to withholding of fines, lower taxes or obtaining legal clearance.

Prepare Your Business Before the ZATCA Waiver Deadline:

The ZATCA tax penalty waiver extension will give the Saudi companies which may have involved it the opportunity to address a number of historical tax compliance issues in December 31, 2026. The main steps have been to identify outstanding revenues, combination of data, determination of eligible sanctions and the payment of the principal tax or the recovery of an approved payment plan over the respective period.

The initiative is also an area in which companies need to strengthen their current accounting and invoicing processes, instead of seeing it as a single solution. Precise reports, clear responsibility for a specific task, and regular reconciliation can decrease the risk of a repeated error.
